I
was always taught and have always preached "fixed in a
fight". Meaning that if the time came that you needed to
depend on a knife for self defense it should be a fixed blade.
After all a folder by definition is already broken into at least
two pieces.
The major problem I saw with the EDC of a fixed blade was comfort.
Face it, the first thing you think about when you imagine carrying
a fixed blade is the traditional strong side hip carry in a
kydex or leather sheath. At the bare minimum you would have
to wear a long t-shirt to cover it. It doesn't matter if you
are carrying for self defense, work or hunting. Everytime you
want to get that knife out you would have to lift up the concealment
garment and access the knife before coming over head or out
the the side to cut. This is not even taking into account things
like Tec Locs and loops that move the sheath farther away from
your body hampering concealment. They also keep the sheath "fixed"
not allowing for movement and therefor becoming uncomfortable.
This was the inspiration for the Tactical Tether and eventually
the Mercharness. Both of them are minimalist rigs. They both
allow for the all day carry of a fixed blade and allow drawing
to be done without the off hand in most cases. They also provide
the ONLY way to get a clearing cut on the way out besides drawing
in a reverse grip that severly limits your reach and follow
up attacks.
If you have fixed blades that are sitting unused try picking
up a Tactical Tether or Mercharness and give an EDC fixed blade
a try. |

We would love to see pictures of your mercharnss or mercleashes
in action or just on your gear. Pictures of you wearing the
MCS t-shirt in strange and exotic places is cool too. Every
week we will pick a few out and send them a mercharness, mercleash
or Tactical Tether. Every month a name will be drawn from the
weekly winners and that person will have a the choice of either
an MCS t-shirt or a copy of my two DVD set. Send pictures and
stories to mercop@mercop.com.
