Whether
we are talking about so called “hip shooting”
or “Speed Rock” the situation being encountered
is supposed to be the same.
That is you have your pistol holstered and are face
to face with a bad guy. When he attempts to draw something
you are supposed to push off/strike the BG with your
weak-hand, draw with your strong hand and begin to shoot.
This is laughable at best.
This is what happens when firearms guys are not DT guys
or vice versa. There are two different things that I
do from here. One is that if he is making a furtive
movement I will attempt to close whatever little distance
is between us (I deal with people within arms reach)
and trap/control the weapon hand.
The second which replaces the technique I called laughable
is as soon as you see furtive movement is to shove the
suspect in the chest with both hands like a football
linemen. By that I mean try to get up and under his
pecs to force him back on his heels.
Then as he goes ass over tin cups you draw your pistol
and engage at the same time moving off line and back
while seeking available cover. Pushing him back does
a few good things; one is that it breaks his balance
sending him backwards.
If his hands have not made it to the waistband they
will go out to his sides and up letting you see clean
hands or a weapon. As his head rocks back he will involuntarily
close his eyes for a spit second. With one shot you
can disrupt two of the three things needed to attack,
sight base and air.
I never understood why you would want to split your
energy by striking with one hand.
If you can have their back to a wall or a car so they
can smash their head off of it even better. When you
do the Panic Push keep your elbows in for power and
strike with the heel of the palms.
